Ropewalk

The Ropewalk, in an extraordinary granite building along the northern boundary of the Charlestown Navy Yard, is a modern waterfront community that showcases area’s historic beauty. A former ropewalk facility, this building now features 97 rental units. The developer has woven original elements of the factory into the composition without sacrificing form or function. An artful blend of a subtle color palette and sophisticated finishes with raw materials — granite, brick, steel and wooden beams — produces a refined yet dramatic effect, imparting a feeling of gravitas uncommonly found in residential apartment buildings.

The History

Ropewalk is situated in Boston’s Charlestown Navy Yard and designated on the National Register of Historic Places. This original structure was built in 1838 as a rope-making facility, the last of its kind in the United States. It served as the primary facility for the United States Navy’s rope production, its elongated design enabling the crafting of cords for renowned ships. After the Navy Yard was decommissioned in 1974, the structures stood abandoned and dilapidated for nearly five decades, enduring a series of destructive fires. Transforming the historic building into 92 residential units, complemented by an additional five units in the adjacent former tar house, has brought new life to this site, and stands as a testament to American industrial history.

The location

For more than a century, a gas-lit tree-lined walkway informally known as “Flirtation Walk” ran parallel to the Ropewalk. Today residents enjoy this restored pathway adorned with gas lights, benches just outside their front door. Located just a 10 minute bus ride from Downtown Boston, complementary MGH shuttle, several BlueBike stations nearby, 30 minutes commute to both Seaport and Cambridge, this is convenient location. There are many restaurants, stores, and historical sites to see all within walking distance from Ropewalk.
